Retaining Wall Ideas for Structural Protection for Home Improvement

Many people follow retaining wall ideas for home improvement in hilly regions to protect their land. These structures provide sufficient protection against soil erosion if they are constructed accurately. Various retaining wall ideas can also increase the stability of the slope to prevent a massive landslide. Many homeowners lose their dream home because of not installing it, and many don’t understand how a retaining wall can provide sufficient protection to the slope.

Here, we will answer your question, and after reading this article, you will realize the retaining walls and structural protection and why it is necessary to build one.

Retaining walls for structural protection

There are several types of retaining walls, but we have shortlisted the most effective, easy to build, and reasonable walls here.

1. Gabion

It is also known as gabion check dam, which is filled in rocks and other granulates and is protected by coir. The rocks or granules are selected by the engineers, and they are bound together tightly by using a steel wire. These rocks and granules trap the soil particles and let the water passes slowly.

2. Rock breast wall

These walls are low and constructed at the base of the slope by using stacking rocks and gravels. The main objective of building this dam is to defend the foot of a slope. As a result, it will prevent the slope damage caused by soil erosion. If the constructor can govern the height-width ratio and the angle, the stability will increase.

3. Mechanically stabilized walls

There are various classes of inclusions that have different properties and shapes, and these inclusions are utilized to strengthen the wall backfills. You can choose geogrids fabrics or wire mesh, or polyester fiber, which will stabilize the inclusions.

4. Reinforced retaining wall

It is consisted of a granular matrix or reinforced with a few successive layers of firm metal strips. When the shear stresses develop at the back of the backfill, the stress is transferred through the interface friction to the tensile resistance in that used metal strips. The principle of building this reinforced wall is similar to the construction of a welded wire retaining wall.

5. Welded wire walls

This wall is made of granular soil structures and welded wire. The wire is placed between the lifts of granulates. These walls don’t have many constraints, and you can use the soils to reinforce the volume compared to the other systems.

These are the common retaining walls for structural protection.

Why do you need to construct a retaining wall for landscape?

Many people don’t realize the necessity of building one. Avoiding constructing a structure in the riverbank or in hilly areas can result in a severe consequence. You can see the consequence that the people near Lake Michigan faced during 1997-98. During March, the height of that Lake increased to 15 feet and invaded the unprotected shoreline. The water washed away the sand, along with the vegetation. Everything went down in the Lake’s water. On the second day of that storm, the people started losing their houses, and many people became homeless at that period. Constructing a retaining wall at that time could solve all the land and houses.
